2007 Commissions & Projects

Futuresonic supports the creation of new work and seeks to enable artists to develop work at a larger scale. Futuresonic has an influence that extends beyond the festival: it supports artists' creative development, produces artworks which then tour internationally, and develops projects outside the festival period.

In 2007 Futuresonic commissioned new artworks for the Futuresonic 2007 festival and for the inaugural Manchester International Festival, presented a showcase at the Sonar festival in Barcelona, plus co-produced the worldwide launch of the amazing TENORI-ON by Yamaha and Toshio Iwai.

One of the new artworks commissioned by Futuresonic in 2007 has been shown 18 times at international events, and identified by New York Times as the highlight of Eyebeam's Source Code exhibition. The Duellists was one of 3 major new commissions in Futuresonic's Art For Shopping Centres exhibition, also featuring Harwood and Katherine Moriwaki, which was developed over an 18 month period and featured linked activities across the UK. MediaShed were invited to the Manchester Arndale Shopping Centre by Futuresonic to make a film combining free-media with free-running. Parkour, or freerunning, involves fluid, uninterrupted movement, adapting motion to obstacles in the environment. MediaShed ft David Valentine and Methods of Movement created the film overnight in the Arndale shopping centre, filmed using only the in-house CCTV system, and it was then shown on the screens inside the shopping centre from 10-20 May 2007.

Manchester International Festival

Futuresonic was commissioned by the inaugural Manchester International Festival to present Manchester : Peripheral by Alastair Dant, Tom Davis & David Gunn (The Folk Songs Project). An immersive installation in in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens remixed and replayed the sounds of Manchester. Live network links connected the historic heart of Manchester and the periphery, to give people living on the edges of the city control over the evolving mix of music, voice and ambient sounds. Manchester : Peripheral was first commissioned by Futuresonic in 2006. Futuresonic then commissioned phase 2 for Manchester International Festival, working with the artists over 18 months in total.
